REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS
TYPES OF REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS -
1) SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
2) ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
1) SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of both the gametes (male and female).Male parent produces the male gamete and the female parent produces the female gamete.A male gamete is usually small with a nucleus and little cytoplasm. The female gamete is larger, with a nucleus and more cytoplasm than the male. The fusion of these two gametes is called as fertilisation. The product of fusion of the two gamates is called zygote. After fertilisation, the zygote undergoes cell division and growth.Ultimately it forms the new individual.
In many plants ,the male and the female parts are present in the same flower .Such flowers are called bisexual.Examples-pea,rose,mustard,sunflowers,china rose.
In some plants, the male and the female parts are borne in different flowers. Examples-date palm, papaya, mulberry, corn and cucumber.
2) ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Asexual reproduction not involves the union of gametes. There are several methods of asexual reproduction-
1) Binary Fission
2) Budding
3) Fragmentation
4) Spore Formation
5) Regeneration
6) Vegetative Propagation
1) Binary Fission : Asexual mode of reproduction in which an organism divides into two daughter organisms of equal size.
2) Budding : Asexual mode of reproduction in which a small outgrowth (bud) appears on the body of the organism.
3) Fragmentation : In some filamentous organisms such as spirogyra (an alga),the filaments break into two or more fragments. Each fragment or piece grows into a new individual.
4) Spore Formation : Spore Formation is a method of asexual reproduction which is found in non flowering plants such as fungi (Rhizopus) and bacteria. In this method of reproduction, the parent plant produces hundreds of tiny spores which can grow into new plants.
5) Regeneration : The ability of living things to repair themselves or grow lost parts is called regeneration.Plants generally have greater powers of regeneration than animals do.
6) Vegetative Reproduction : Asexual method of reproduction in plants where vegetative parts (root, stem and leaf) are used to grow new plants.
